Clipper: replacement shells for garage door remote controls

Your gate remote still works, but the casing is broken, discolored, or cracked after years in your pocket or on your keychain. In that case, you don't need a new remote: you just replace the housing by transferring the existing electronic board. It’s a repair that takes just a few minutes and avoids having to reprogram the remote control to the control unit.

The 2-button shells in our catalog are available in black and transparent yellow.

How to replace it

Open the old shell, remove the board with the battery, transfer it into the new shell, ensuring the buttons are oriented correctly, and close it back up. The programming remains on the board, so the gate continues to respond as before: there is no need to redo the self-learning process on the control unit or call anyone.

Expert advice. Before ordering, open your old remote and take a photo of the board: what must match is the shape of the housing and the position of the buttons relative to the contacts on the board, not just the number of buttons. Garage door remotes have had many variations over the years, even within the same brand. With a photo of the board and the open shell, we can tell you in an instant if it's the right replacement part. And while you have it open, check the battery: often that's the problem, and in most of these remotes, it is a 3V lithium coin cell or a 12V A23 type battery.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to reprogram the remote after the replacement?

No. The code is stored on the electronic board, which is transferred to the new shell: the gate will continue to respond without any action on the control unit.

How do I know if the shell is compatible?

Compare the shape of the housing and the position of the buttons relative to your board. The number of buttons alone is not enough: check the dimensions and the locking clips as well. When in doubt, send us a photo of the remote opened up.

Does the shell include the board or the battery?

No, it is just the housing: the board is the one from your own remote. The battery should be reused or replaced separately, and this is the perfect time to do so since the remote is already open.

The gate no longer responds: is it the shell's fault?

Almost never. In order, the most frequent causes are a dead battery, oxidized or worn-out button contacts, and, more rarely, an issue with the control unit. The shell is replaced for aesthetic reasons or when it is so broken that it no longer holds the board in place.

What battery does a garage door remote take?

It depends on the model: the most common are 3V lithium coin cells and 12V cylindrical A23 type batteries. Check your old one and see our lithium batteries section.
