Autel charging stations: four choices to make before ordering
A wallbox should not be chosen based on the brand, but on four specific criteria, and they must be decided in this order because each one constrains the next: single-phase or three-phase, with or without cable, wall-mounted or pole-mounted, and which connectivity. Getting the first one wrong means having to start all over again.
1. Single-phase or three-phase: your meter decides
This is not a preference. Italian household utilities are generally single-phase up to 6 kW of contracted power: in that case, the useful wallbox is the 7 kW model, which is also the maximum the system can supply. Three-phase concerns larger supplies, businesses, and homes with increased power, and opens up to 11 and 22 kW versions. Installing a 22 kW unit on a single-phase supply is pointless: it will still charge at 7 kW.
Also, check the car: many electric vehicles accept a maximum of 11 kW in alternating current, so a 22 kW station will not charge them any faster.
2. With cable or without cable
| Version | When it is recommended |
|---|---|
| With cable 5-meter Type 2 | Domestic use: plug in and go, the cable stays on the charging station. More convenient for daily use |
| Without cable, Type 2 socket | Shared use, businesses, condominiums, shared garages: everyone uses their own cable, the station remains clean and less exposed to damage |
3. Wall-mounted or pole-mounted
If there is no wall in the right spot, you need poles and pedestals: they exist in 1-sided versions for a single charging station and 2-sided to serve two parking spaces with a single anchor. They must be paired with the brackets corresponding to the model — ADA for the Standard, ADA for the Compact — and they are not interchangeable between series. For the MaxiCharger AC ULTRA, there is a dedicated pedestal.
4. Connectivity: Wi-Fi, LAN, or 4G
Wi-Fi is enough if the charging station is close to the router. LAN is the stable choice where the wireless signal is weak, typically in an underground garage. 4G with SIM is needed where no network reaches: parking lots, outdoor areas, isolated installations. Connectivity is not just a luxury: it is needed for updates, consumption monitoring, access management, and, for professional installations, for reporting charging sessions.
The MaxiCharger AC ULTRA versions with dual 22 kW sockets serve two cars simultaneously and, in the variants with a POS terminal, allow for direct payment: they are designed for public parking lots, hotels, and commercial activities, not for home use.
IP54 or IP65
IP54 protects against dust and splashes and is suitable for a garage or a sheltered wall. IP65 resists water jets from any direction and is the correct choice for outdoor installation without any cover above.
Expert advice. The wallbox is the simple part: what decides if the project works is the electrical panel. You need a dedicated protection and a direct current fault monitoring device, and on many household supplies, you also need a load balancing system; otherwise, when the car is charging and the oven starts, the meter will trip. This is where the energy meter comes in: it measures the house's power consumption and makes the station modulate the power. Before ordering, have your system evaluated by a qualified installer — and check if your current contracted power is sufficient or needs to be increased, as that process has its own timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions about Autel charging stations
How long does it take to charge?
It depends on the battery capacity and the actual power delivered. As a general rule of thumb, a 7 kW wallbox covers a full overnight charge for most electric cars; with 11 or 22 kW, the times are reduced, but only if the car and the system can handle that power.
Can I install it myself?
No. The installation requires work on the electrical panel with dedicated protections and must be performed by a qualified installer, who will issue the declaration of conformity. It is also a condition for the validity of the warranty and for any access to incentives.
What does load balancing do?
It measures in real time how much power the house is using and automatically reduces the charging power so as not to exceed the meter limit. Without it, the sum of charging and domestic consumption can trip the circuit breaker.
Is 4G connectivity necessary?
Only where Wi-Fi or a network cable cannot reach. In a home garage with a good signal, Wi-Fi is sufficient; 4G makes sense in parking lots, outdoor areas, and public installations, where it is also needed for remote access management.
Can I charge using my photovoltaic system?
Yes, and that is the combination that makes an electric car cost-effective. However, the system needs to know how much energy you are producing: that is the role of the energy meter, which allows you to modulate the charging based on the available production. See the photovoltaic section.
