Chint Meter: the meter the inverter needs to work well
It is the part that almost everyone forgets in their shopping cart. The meter — or energy meter — is installed in the distribution board, near the exchange point with the grid, and measures in real time how much energy is flowing out to the grid and how much is flowing in. It communicates this data to the inverter, which, without it, cannot optimize self-consumption or correctly manage battery charging and discharging: it would be working blind.
Chint is the manufacturer of the meters used as a reference by various inverter manufacturers, including Solax and Huawei.
Selection table
| Model | Supply | For inverter |
|---|---|---|
| DDSU666 | Single-phase | Solax |
| DDSU666 + CT | Single-phase with current transformer | Solax |
| DDSU666-H | Single-phase | Huawei |
| DTSU666-D | Three-phase | Solax |
| DTSU666-D + CT | Three-phase with current transformers | Solax |
The initial letter is the first filter: DD stands for single-phase, DT for three-phase. It must match your power supply, which you can see on your energy meter or utility bill.
With or without CT
The CT (current transformer) is a clamp that opens and snaps shut around the cable, measuring the current without having to disconnect it. Therefore, versions with CT are installed without cutting the main conductors and are the only solution when currents are high or when the cable cannot be cut. Versions without CT measure directly, with the conductors passing through the meter.
Expert advice. The meter must be chosen based on two things together: your power supply (single-phase or three-phase) and the inverter brand. It is not enough that it is a Chint: the model for Huawei and the one for Solax have different firmware and communication protocols, and they are not interchangeable. If you are not sure, tell us your inverter brand and model and we will check before you order. And remember that it must be installed in the distribution board at the exchange point: this is work for a qualified electrician.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the meter mandatory?
It is not a legal requirement, but it is essential for a grid-connected system to optimize self-consumption, and without it, a system with storage cannot correctly manage the batteries. In practice, it is a necessary component for a hybrid system.
Can I use a meter of one brand with an inverter of another?
Only if the inverter manufacturer declares it compatible. The meter communicates with the inverter via a specific protocol: models not provided for by the manufacturer may not be recognized or may provide incorrect readings.
How do I know if I have a single-phase or three-phase power supply?
It is indicated on the energy meter and on your bill. Italian domestic utilities are generally single-phase up to 6 kW of contracted power; three-phase relates to larger supplies, commercial businesses, and homes with heat pumps or charging stations.
Can I install it myself?
No. It must be mounted in the electrical panel, at the point of exchange with the grid: the intervention requires a qualified electrician, both for safety reasons and because incorrect wiring will compromise the readings.
What is the difference between the meter and the utility provider's meter?
They are two distinct instruments. The utility's meter measures for billing purposes; the meter serves the inverter to know the real-time flow at the exchange point and regulate production, storage, and withdrawal accordingly.
